Fr. Władysław (rel. Marian) Pawlik SDS (1932-2013)

Fr. Władysław Pawlik was born on November 3rd 1932 in Płoki, district of Chrzanów. On October 7th 1949 he entered the Novitiate of the Society of the Divine Savior in Bagno and received the habit and his religious name: Marian. After completing the Novitiate formation he continued his education in High School in Trzebnica. On October 3rd 1953 he made his first religious profession in Bagno.

In 1953-1959 he studied philosophy and theology at the College of Philosophy and Theology of the Dominican Fathers in Kraków. On October 3rd 1956, in Kraków, he took his perpetual vows.  After receiving dispensation from Stefan Cardinal Wyszyński he was ordained to the Deaconate on June 22nd 1958, by the Most Rev. Eugeniusz Baziak. On October 12th of the same year, in Bagno, he was ordained to the Priesthood by the Most Rev. Andrzej Wronka. Afterwards he lived in religious house in Kraków – Zakrzówek, until his graduation in June 1959.

The first place of Fr. Pawlik’s pastoral ministry was Zakopane, where he lived at the Salvatorian religious house, during the years 1959-1964. In 1960-1964 he was the community consultor and treasurer. In 1964 he was transferred to the religious house in Warsaw at Olimpijska Street # 84, where he worked as pastoral assistant at the Parish in Wawrzyszewo and other pastoral centers of the Archdiocese of Warsaw. With permission of his superiors he also began theological studies at the Academy of Catholic Theology. In 1966 he was transferred to the religious house in Kraków at Łobzowska Street # 22.  In response to pastoral needs of the Archdiocese of Kraków, he was sent, as parochial vicar, to St. Stephen Parish in Kraków. In 1969 he was transferred to the religious house in Verona, NJ, where he lived until March 1982, and was superior and treasurer of the local Salvatorian Community.

In 1982 by the Decree of the Provincial Superior he was transferred to the religious house in Merrillville. In 1987, at the 14th General Chapter in Steinfeld he was chosen as member of the general council of the Society of the Divine Savior. In 1987-1993 he was general consultor, general secretary for missions, and treasurer.  In 1993, after expiration of the term of the general council in Rome, he returned to Merrillville, where again he engaged in pastoral ministry.

During the 22nd Provincial Chapter, in 1997 in Kraków, he was chosen as member of the council of the Polish Province of the Salvatorians. In 1997-2000 he was the provincial vicar. In 2000 he returned to Merrillville, where again he was superior and treasurer of the religious house.  In the same year, with a decision of the provincial council, he was appointed as vice – superior of the USA Region of the Polish Province of the Salvatorians. In 2012, at his own request, he returned to Poland and lived since then at the religious house in Trzebinia.

His confreres remember Fr. Władysław as good, humble and hard-working priest. In memory of numerous friends of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Częstochowa in Merrillville, where he worked generously for 19 years, he will remain as zealous priest and religious.
Fr. Władysław Pawlik passed away in the morning of July 16th 2013, at the hospital in Chrzanów. He went to Our Lord at the age of 81, in his 55th year as a priest and 60th year as a religious.  His funeral took place on July 19th this year, at 11.00, at the Minor Basilica of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Trzebinia. He was buried at the local tomb of his religious community.
